Flight 253 passenger: Sharp-dressed man aided terror suspect Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab onto plane without passport (MLive.com exclusive)

A Michigan man who was aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 says he witnessed Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab trying to board the plane in Amsterdam without a passport.

Kurt Haskell of Newport, Mich., who posted an earlier comment about his experience, talked exclusively with MLive.com and confirmed he was on the flight by sending a picture of his boarding pass. He and his wife, Lori, were returning from a safari in Uganda when they boarded the NWA flight on Friday.

Haskell said he and his wife were sitting on the ground near their boarding gate in Amsterdam, which is when they saw Mutallab approach the gate with an unidentified man.

Kurt and Lori Haskell are attorneys with Haskell Law Firm in Taylor. Their expertise includes bankruptcy, family law and estate planning.

While Mutallab was poorly dressed, his friend was dressed in an expensive suit, Haskell said. He says the suited man asked ticket agents whether Mutallab could board without a passport. “The guy said, 'He's from Sudan and we do this all the time.'”

Mutallab is Nigerian. Haskell believes the man may have been trying to garner sympathy for Mutallab's lack of documents by portraying him as a Sudanese refugee.

The ticket agent referred Mutallab and his companion to her manager down the hall, and Haskell didn't see Mutallab again until after he allegedly tried to detonate an explosive on the plane.

Haskell said the flight was mostly unremarkable. That was until he heard a flight attendant say she smelled smoke, just after the pilot announced the plane would land in Detroit in 10 minutes. Haskell got out of his seat to view the brewing commotion.

“I stood up and walked a couple feet ahead to get a closer look, and that's when I saw the flames,” said Haskell, who sat about seven rows behind Mutallab. “It started to spread pretty quickly. It went up the wall, all the way to ceiling.”

Haskell, who described Mutallab as a diminutive man who looks like a teenager, said about 30 seconds passed between the first mention of smoke and when Mutallab was subdued by fellow passengers.

“He didn't fight back at all. This wasn't a big skirmish,” Haskell said. “A couple guys jumped on him and hauled him away.”
The ordeal has Haskell and his wife a little shaken. Flight attendants were screaming during the fire and the pilot sounded notably nervous when bringing the plane in for a landing, he said.

“Immediately, the pilot came on and said two words: emergency landing,” Haskell said. “And that was it. The plane sped up instead of slowing down. You could tell he floored it.”

As Mutallab was being led out of the plane in handcuffs, Haskell said he realized that was the same man he saw trying to board the plane in Amsterdam.

Passengers had to wait about 20 minutes before they were allowed to exit the plane. Haskell said he and other passengers waited about six hours to be interviewed by the FBI.

About an hour after landing, Haskell said he saw another man being taken into custody. But a spokeswoman from the FBI in Detroit said Mutallab was the only person taken into custody.

This post has been updated as of 4:57 p.m. Please note the change at the bottom of the story, in which the FBI says no one else was taken into custody.

This would appear to be an opportunistic and awkward moment all at the same time! Miss Harrison gets to put her name on an exclusive story by nothing more than the chance that one of the Mlive commenters happened to be an eye witness to the entire event (you can't get much better than this as a reporter) and pug aka Mr. Kurt Haskell (and his wife Lori who has been inadvertently drawn in) of Haskell Law Firm of Taylor, who simply wanted to convey some factual information (from his observations) to set some things straight as far as the comments to the original posting, now has to change his login name and may have some trouble in writing off a pleasure trip as business seeing as how this is now public knowledge.

Such a cynical post. These people had every right to want their business as part of the news article. Good information from them that the major news do not have as yet.

Congrats on the Idiot of the year award !.
1st) There was a single shooter in the Fort Hood shooting not 3 moron.
2nd) He did try and blow it up on decent for landing which would have been his best time seeing as how if he had succeeded he would have killed everyone on the plane and plenty more when those parts of the plane go crashing into a heavily populated downtown detroit!

3rd) He was on a terror watch list after his father decided to warn the U.S. and Nigerian officials about his son and his intentions back in November.
But the U.. Government decided it was good to just put him on a watch list that apparently nobody actually watches instead of the no fly list he should have been placed on.

And I guess the senate has been to busy pushing that health package that 40% of people want and 60% oppose to actually do their job's and improve the security of our nation.

Yes, there were at least three shooters in the Ft. Hood incident. It's time the American sheeple stop drinking the kool-aid.

really, where did you hear there was one shooter??? Fox News or CNN?

Try listening to some first on-site reports of this tragedy orchestrated to set up muslims once again ... Did you even know the connection to Va Tech and MK Ultra??? That's what I thought?

What war has the usa ever entered, or gone anywhere to murder innocents, that wasn't a false flag?

Jeesh, you get naive Mole, shill, stooge of the year award.

And somehow voters keep electing stupid people to represent them...........
According to WOOD tv the guy had the stuff in his underwear, wonder what any 7 virgins would have thought if he lost that part?

Thanks Pete Hoekstra and your cronies for not doing more about terrorism.

Ms. Harrison:

Thank you for verifying Mr. Haskell's post. Credibility is the only thing that stands between you and the tabloids. You have served your readers well--seriously. The advent of online news has plunged all of us--but particularly journalists--into unknown territory. You and your readers are making the rules as you go.

My unasked-for advice: no matter how difficult or inconvenient or believable, work to verify your online sources and their stories. It has never been more important than it is now. Again, my thanks and best of luck to you.

I doubt very much the flight attendants were "screaming". I'll bet though they were yelling to each other re emergency equipment and commands to the passengers.

Before believing this story, the following questions:
1. Was the terrorist on the flight manifest ?
2. Was the flight cleared for departe by the US authorities ?

according to CNN this was the case (http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/12/27/airline.attack.qanda/index.html#cnnSTCText)
:
Was he on any security watch lists?

U.S. authorities say they were contacted by the man's father ahead of the attack, but whether he was placed on any so-called No-Fly list maintained by the United States is unclear. Dutch officials say the passenger's name appeared on a manifest supplied by the airline, which was passed to U.S. authorities, who cleared the flight to depart.

If this was the case, the guy didn't have a passport, was a Sudanese refugee but still appeared on the manifest under his own name ?

Anyway, from experience i can tell that flying to the USA from the Netherlands without a passport is a big NO GO, so this story, also given the above, is doubtful imho.

Flying Dutchman, you still don't get it? He was allowed to board without passport because he had been cleared to do so by rouge elements within a government intelligence agency. What else should happen that people finally wake up and stop the conspirators of FALSE FLAG attacks who call those trying to uncover THEM "conspiracy theorists"?

So he used his own name, had no passport and no VISA ?
But obviously tried to get on board faking he was a Sudanese refugee ?

and all of that because if a conspiracy within the government..

really, are you serious about that ?

Dutchman, forget about the smoke screen and lies you hear in the mass media. They are complicit by not questioning the official story of these events. We have and eye witness - who happens to be a lawyer - and as such he is aware of the consequences he has to face in case of bearing false witness. I know it is hard for you to swallow but please accept that governments do carry out false flag attacks(google gulf of tonkin incident) in order to push certain agendas.

"If this was the case, the guy didn't have a passport, was a Sudanese refugee but still appeared on the manifest under his own name ?"

Would his real name have been that unusual for a Sudanese Muslim refugee? Perhaps he didn't want to use his passport for fear of any stamps from his recent trips to Yemen causing added interest?
