FORT WORTH, Texas -- Residents in a Tarrant County neighborhood said their health is in danger because of a rat infestation. They
said the rodents are being spotted in homes, on sidewalks and even
inside the elementary school. Rat remains can be seen in holes along
the street.Resident Roger Rhodes said it is "just gross."
"They're
not cute, little, fuzzy mice," resident Kelly Skellie said. "They are
dead, dying rats that are just laying there in our driveway, in the
back yard, in the flower beds, wherever."Live rats can be seen running along the sidewalks, digging in the ground and swimming in residents' pools."One day alone, I think I had five rats I fished out of the pool," Rhodes said. The
homeowners association consulted exterminators about the rodent
invasion. The rats are slowly being poisoned, but the poison also
drives the rats to water sources. Dogs are now getting sick, and
neighbors said they fear their children will also fall ill."It's unhealthy and unsanitary to have the rats around your children and hurting them," Rhodes said.Residents said they hope the rats die more quickly than they can mate. Some people argued that the rats were in the neighborhood first and are now the victims of development as more people move in.
